evaluation for music magazine

Evaluation for Music Magazine

  1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I chose the masthead 'life' because it links the the main story about 'Bryonie Dixon's' life and past, also because there is a lot about celeb gossip which is also their life and lifestyle. I have positioned the Masthead in the left corner because this is the typical place to put a masthead. I have placed the subtitles on the right and left third on my front cover because i feel it makes the image stand out more because it is placed in the middle of the front cover. This is the same as other magazines due to the positioning of the main image. I have ensured i have a consistant house style because it is important to keep a colour scheme throughout a magazine because it doesn't confuse the audience, i have also used the same model as the main storyline is about the model. The model is directly looking at the camera which engages to the audience and it is medium shot.

  1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My media product represents social groups through the socio economic groups which would be of ABCD1 I think my magazine represents this group because of the price and also the main story lines as it represents every type of social class, also because the model is of one of these SEG’s it represents the group because of the imagery used. Also the age group is 16-24 and my model is 17 so she is of this age group which shows how it links to age as I have used someone within the age range of my audience which I feel works better. The generic type is female of age 16-24 I have reflected this through the model as she is female and I have used her throughout so it is female dominated which creates this effect and I feel it shows the generic type.

  1. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I think Bauer media would publish my magazine as the audience is for females and Bauer don’t have a women’s music magazine which I think would create competition for the other major publishers. Bauer Media Kerrang readers:

  • Kerrang! readers are the heaviest music consumers purchasing over 6 albums per month on average (53% more than the national average) and 8 times more likely to spend over £200 a year on albums. The readers are also 5.5 times more likely to attend a rock gig.
  • 1.3 million listeners – the biggest commercial radio station outside London and double the audience of XFM.
  • 2009 saw 13% of all viewers with
  • MCH TV tune into Kerrang! – this equates to 7.1million viewers on Kerrang TV
  • 504,912 page impressions, 55,589 twitter followers,12,208 Facebook fans.
  • 87% of K! readers buy every issue.

    1. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience of my media product ranges from the ages 16-24 because of the content within my music magazine, it will also be for the people who enjoy R&B music. The mean age range is 20 who will be within the socio economic group of ABCD1. The reader will be interested in real life stories and gossip within the media industry. The gender of my music magazine would be female as the content of my music magazine would be more towards female through the fashion, music and also the main story. The pyschometric profile for my music magazine are women interesting in spending their leisure time knowing about real life stories, shopping and spending money on the magazine. They own products such as designer products and or highstreet products such as clothing. My readers spend average of £300 on shoes per year, £1500 on clothes per year, £1000 on audio equipment per year.

    1. How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted/addressed my audience through the choice of colour schemes and imagery as my main image throughout are very dominant, the subtitles/subheadings are brightly coloured which will attract those interested within my magazine. The content within my magazine is also very interesting which may make an audience buy the product. I would say the magazine is fairly priced so therefore easily accessible and affordable. The colour scheme used within my media product is very bold compared to the imagery used, as my images are dark but noticeable along with the colours of my content. The promotion used on my front cover may also attract the audience through the genre of my magazine and the names used are very well known and usually sell out within concerts so it gives my audience a chance to win to see these big stars.

    1. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I used Photo shop throughout my product using a range of procedures. These include changing the scale of my images to make them fit to the correct size, I also used a You Tube clip too help me create a porcelain skin effect on my model to use for my front cover, contents and double page spread, I also use spot fix which helped me remove and unwanted spots or moles from my image. The Gaussian blur tool helped me with my porcelain skin effect which became very useful throughout the making of my media product. I also used publisher to make my article for my double page spread as it was easier to use. The character for my fonts and layout were very useful as there are a range of fonts I could use for my music magazine and also the colours were thought out to create the effect I wanted within my music magazine. The quick selection tool within Photo shop meant I could erase any unwanted background quickly and easily without any hassle of erasing any of my imagery.

    1. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression form from it to the full product?

I feel I have learnt how to use Photo shop more and I find it easier to edit my images and place them in correct places to make the magazine look more professional and attractive for my audience. I have also learnt how to make the skin look porcelain to create more of a flawless effect within my magazine which I feel works better to make the images look professional. The two pieces work different because although the model is the same person I have changed to style of image, the pose and clothing, I have also changed the layout and colour scheme for my magazine to show how I have improved my work to create my music and college magazine. I feel the music magazine looks a lot better because of the skills I have picked up within Photo shop and because I used other music magazines to get ideas I feel creating a music magazine was a lot easier to create than a college magazine I also had a lot longer to create my music magazine so I could constantly change my music magazine to make it better by a simple procedure of colour or levels within Photo shop.

“I think the photograph on the front cover is good because she is looking into the camera. I also like the colour scheme used”
“I like the colour scheme and the layout of the pages. The images are really good, and the double page spread layout is very good”
“I like the masthead and skyline and the house style colours. I like the title in the contents page with red background behind it. There could be more features in the left third and there is a gap in the middle of DPS- love the photos though!”
“You could have made the main feature bigger so it stands out more, or made the smaller features smaller”
“On the contents page you could have put a subscription in order for your readers to continue to buy the following editions.”
“I like the colour scheme and placement of the text on the front cover and the contents page, however I don’t think the heavy one of the dark colour works as well”
“Bigger writing on the DPS but less of it and larger images. Front cover- splash around the win! So that it stands out more”
“You could improve the front cover by making the text more on the left, other than that, I really like the magazine”
I agree about majority of the feedback comments as I feel I could of added or changed the writing within the magazine “You could improve the front cover by making the text more on the left”. I have also taken into consideration about the images on the DPS as they are dark “I don’t think the heavy one of the dark colour works as well”. I could have added a subscription on my contents page and also changed the size of the subtitle features, “On the contents page you could have put a subscription in order for your readers to continue to buy the following editions.”
however the gap on the DPS is so I know where the fold would be if produced into a music magazine, I am pleased with my feedback as most of the audience made correct answers within the music magazine. “Bigger writing on the DPS but less of it and larger images. Front cover- splash around the win! So that it stands out more”
